Zoom into “tips of the month” orange frame

• Switch to Selection Tool (V or Esc)
• Rollover screenshot
• Pointer changes to hand when over the “content grabber”
• Select the screenshot. Note selection indicator in Layers panel
• Move object in layers panel from Text layer to Graphics layer
• Lock the Graphics layer

Add new layer

• Name it “Background”
• Move it to the bottom of the stack (close "Text" to make it work).

Create a new one page doc with two columns

Creating & Editing Text Frames

• Go to page 4
• Target the Text layer
• 
  Create text frame from y=22p across (match the horizontal guide) to 2nd column margin, about 8p high.
• Type in “Customer” shift-return(mac)/shift-enter(win) “Testimonials”
• Select All
• Apply Testimonials paragraph style
• Shrink the frame to fit with a double-click on the center-base handle

On Page 1

• 
  Choose “New Day & Evening Classes”. Note the little red + sign, meaning theirs text past the baseline of the text rectangle
• Drag bottom out to guide at 48p
• Notice cursor
• 
• Save

Reshaping A Text Frame

• Choose the Direct Selection tool (a)
• Choose the text rect’s lower left anchor point
• Deselect
• Reselect with Direct Selection tool, four corner anchors are white centered
• Select just the lower left anchor, it will will be solid blue while others remain white
• Shift-drag it down to the margin
  
• Do the same for the other corner, bringing it up to the blue guide line

Creating Multiple Columns

  Zoom in to “John Q.”
• Select the text frame
• Menu > Object > Text Frame Options…
• 
• Double-click on the text object to switch to text mode
• Insert column breaks before Amy O. and Jeff G.
• Menu > Type > Insert Break Character > Column Break
• Menu > Type > Show Special Characters

Adjusting text inset and vertical alignment

  Select the red text box on page 1

• Hold down the shift key before you click
• If you don’t use shift, you’ll change the gutter below as well

Modifying and updating parent-child graphics frames

Changing the shape of a frame

• Go to page 3
• Unlock the text layer
• (They make it more complex than it needs to be)
• Select the green rect
• Use the Pen tool to add two anchor points to the rect at the two guides
• Drag the upper right corner of the rect’s anchor with the direct select tool
• Click off the rect to deselect it with the direct select tool, then re-click on the upper right corner anchor point
• In the real world, this would most likely be done with two overlapping rectangles, the new rect being white, or with two rectangles and the Pathfinder tool (Window > Object & Layout > Pathfinder)

Wrapping Text Around A Graphic

• Using Smart Guides, shift-drag the Yield sign to the center of the body copy

Selecting and modifying grouped objects

(This is another rarely if ever used function. In normal practice you would have a version of the logo for use on dark backgrounds.)

  Choose the Select Content button in the Control Panel

  This allows you to directly select the objects inside the .ai object
  (Ideally, they should implement Illustrators "Isolation Mode")

Adding a jump line page number
