Types of Graphics: Vector vs. Bitmaps

What is a Vector?

First, a word about Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs).

• Calligraphic or Vector-Drawing CRTs
• Vector displays literally used vector math to move the electron beam across the front of the tube

• Raster (like Black and White TV). From the Latin rastrum for rake

A Vector is geometrical primitive such as a point, line, curve or polygon which can be described by a mathematical formula, and formulas can be infinitely scaled.

Some examples of vector type stuff

• Typesetting

• Things with crisp, smooth edges and solid colors

• Things with smooth gradients of colors

• Scalability

• Small file size

• Highly editable

What is a Raster Image (aka Bitmap)?

• From the Raster-style CRT's

• Rather than a formula, a set of grid picture elements, or pixels, each with a designated color stored in the computers memory

• Bitmaps cannot be infinitely scaled
• When you turn a vector into a bitmap the process is called "Rasterization"

Some examples of bitmap stuff

• Photography

• Blurry images

• Noisy or grainy images

• Images with lots of texture

• Computer Graphics Images (CGI) or 3D images

Now, to add to the confusion!

• Illustrator works with both Vectors and Bitmaps
• Photoshop works with both Bitmaps and Vectors
• But: The majority of Illustrator's tool are for vectors, and the majority of Photoshop's tools are for bitmaps

Pick your poison from the Workspace menu: Essentials

• Grouped
• Popup inpidually from collapsed view or expand to wide view
• Adjust the overall width and the grouped height
• Reorganize-able and save-able configurations
• When lost, choose another configuration, the re-choose Essentials. I suggest you leave them alone for now…
• Panel Options in the upper right corner of each panel group.
