Cluny Reliquaries | le Chat Noir | Musée du Quai Branly | Musée Cluny | Musée Louvre | Musée Orsay

The Musée Natinoal du Moyen Age (Museum of the Middle Ages, aka The Cluny) has a great collection of reliquaries, a special interest of mine. I got a new digital camera, a Canon PowerShot SZ10IS, specifically to get decent pictures inside dark museums, and I wanted to get some good snaps of them in their dimly lit environs. The pictures came out much better then my older camera, but still not as perfect as I might have liked. Still, not bad, considering the conditions.

This reliquary, known in French as a châsse or casket, has this label below it:

Châsse
Region rhenane, fin du XVe siecle. Argent partiellement doré.
Anc. collection Soltykoff, acq. 3n 1861 Cl. 3304

Which can be roughly translated as:

Casket Reliquary
Rhine region, late 15th Century. Partially gilded silver.
Ancient (or ancillary?) collection of Soltykoff, acquired 1861, Cluny catalog number 3304

More information on reliquaries can be found at Wikipedia and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art site.
