Sketching as a design tool

• In general:
• Waste paper!
• Be fearless when facing a blank page
• Work loose and fast
• Phase 1: doodles and thought bubbles
• Then refine
• Phase 2: frames and foregrounds
• But not too much
• Use blocks to rough out areas
• Some principles
• Work with a frame
• Draw out the proportions of the frame of the assignment
• Think about foreground, background and negative space
• Avoid the dreaded Potato Shape
• Label stuff
• Include source materials
